Zainab Al-Eqabi

Zainab Al-Eqabi (born August 19 in Baghdad, Iraq) was wounded by the explosion of an unexploded bomb form the effects of the 1990 war near her home in 1997, and because of a wrong medical diagnosis she lost her leg.
Al-Eqabi is an amputee; she has first used an artificial leg at the age of 7 when she was introduced to crutches, she has been an amputee since the incident. At hospital, a medical error by not treating the wound properly let her right leg to be amputated. Even though, she claims to hold no hate towards the doctor that was responsible for the loss of her leg.
Zainab uses a customized prosthetic leg made by Otto Bock. This enables her to simulate having a normal leg, with small difficulties adapting to the new device. She spoke at a conference on disabilities in Abu Dhabi, she says her story proves how a person with any disability can achieve success no matter how challenging and difficult it gets. She said “I became an amputee at the age of seven. Try telling a child that you can’t run any more, try telling a child who was riding a bicycle that you’re not going to ride a bicycle any more. Going back home as an amputee was the worst nightmare for my cousins, and not only for my () family. Being in an Arab society unfortunately means that they immediately feel that your life is over, especially being a girl in an Arab society. I had to go through a lot of challenges. Yes, I cried a lot, yes, I’ve been injured a lot, I’ve been through a lot of pain but at the end of the day I survived.” 〔(【引用サイトリンク】title= Iraqi amputee tells her success story )
In 2014 she was part of many talks including two TEDx talks, one of them was where she was in TedxBaghdad 2014 speakers list., where she introduced her social project Disabled & Proud which was her own way of facing the society and overcoming the challenges it put her through. She has also appeared on a number of TV programs broadcast all around the Middle East; Al Sharqiya, Al Samaria.
